India Gate: A Symbol of Honour and National Pride

At the very centre of New Delhi, where colonial-era structures and busy streets exist side by side with modern India, there stands a monument of gigantic historical and emotional value: India Gate. Comparatively compared to world landmarks such as the Gateway of India in Mumbai and Arc de Triomphe in Paris, India Gate is not just an awe-inspiring work of architecture but a living memorial to the Indian soldiers’ bravery, sacrifice, and soldierly spirit who gave their lives in the defense of the country.

The Historical Significance of India Gate
India Gate was constructed as a war memorial to the 82,000 Indian soldiers who perished during World War I, fighting in the British Army, as well as the Third Anglo-Afghan War. It was inaugurated in 1931 and was then called the All India War Memorial. The surface of India Gate bears the names of more than 13,000 soldiers, most of whom are still unnamed heroes of history.
The memorial was ordered by the British Imperial government to commemorate Indian soldiers’ unmatched courage and sacrifice. Though colonial in its origins, the monument has now become an integral Indian symbol of national pride and remembrance.
Following the 1971 Indo-Pak war, there was one new addition: the Amar Jawan Jyoti, or the Flame of the Immortal Soldier. Placed under the center archway of India Gate, this perpetual flame burned day and night to commemorate the unknown soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the performance of duty. While the flame was shifted to the National War Memorial in 2019, the history of India Gate as a holy memorial remains.

Architectural Masterpiece
The architectural excellence of India Gate is a combination of classical European and Indian designs. The monument was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the chief architect of New Delhi, and it rises an astonishing 42 meters (138 feet) high. Constructed mostly of red and pale sandstone and granite, the arch‘s design is based on the Triumphal Arch style, which was originally from ancient Rome.
The foundation of the monument is wide and substantial, gradually narrowing as it rises to the arch itself. On the walls are the names of deceased soldiers, inked in tidy, plain letters that highlight the reverent nature of the memorial.
Another distinguishing characteristic of the architecture is symmetry. It is placed on a broad road, Rajpath, which runs from Rashtrapati Bhavan (the President‘s House) to the National Stadium, forming an eyesore of power, remembrance, and nationhood.

Cultural Significance in Contemporary India
India Gate evolved from a memorial for colonial wars to a place highly ingrained in India‘s national identity. It hosts various national events and ceremonies, the most famous of which is the Republic Day Parade every 26th January. On this occasion, India‘s military prowess, its multiculturalism, and technological progress are presented in a grand procession that cuts through India Gate.
Further, India Gate is a place where diverse crowds assemble. Whether a family has a weekend picnic, students take selfies to post on social media, or couples walk in the evening, the area near India Gate is always bustling.
In the evenings, particularly during winter, the lawns around the monument become a vibrant public area. Ice cream, tea, and street foods are sold by street vendors. Children kite-fly, rickshaw rides are taken by tourists, and the lit up monument itself makes for a dazzling backdrop to the celebrations.
